From March 23 to 27th 2008 the File Hills Qu’Appelle Tribal Council, (FHQTC), will play host to the 2008 Saskatchewan First Nations Winter Games, in the city of Regina, Saskatchewan. It has been 10 years since FHQTC last hosted the games back in 1998.
This event encourages Saskatchewan’s First Nation youth to be actively involved in sports by empowering them to compete at the highest level in Saskatchewan to showcase their athletic abilities. As many as 3,835 young athletes will descend upon the City of Regina during this time. This number does not include their Coaches, Chaperones, Family and devoted fans.
Planning is presently underway to provide these young people with a real show. The opening Ceremonies, being called Visions of Gold, will feature a spectacular entry of athletes, along with dignitaries, performers and a pyrotechnics display.
Many other events are planned throughout the week to keep the youth involved and active. A Teen Dance is scheduled for Tuesday evening with Rap Wars on March 25th, all at Banner Hall. Puppeteer, Buddy Big Mountain is also expected to do an evening of entertainment for the youth.
Guest appearances and performers will be featured throughout the week. Recording artist, Shane Yellowbird will be performing at a fund raising event on March 24, 2008 at Casino Regina Show Lounge. Tickets for this performance are being sold individually, in tables of 4, 6, or 8 and can be obtained by contacting Shelley at (306) 332-8235.
Athletes will compete in five medal sports. Click here for more info. Hockey will wrap up on Thursday March 27th with the final games being featured at the Brandt Centre. Broomball, Volleyball and Badminton will be played in venues around the city. Medals and Presentations are expected to be done by Wednesday, March 26th at the Brandt Centre. The demonstration sport for the 2008 Winter Games is Juvenile Mixed Curling, which is featured at the Callie Curling Club.
There will be a Tradeshow on March 25th and 26th in Salon A - Queensbury Downs. For more information, please contact Sherry Keepness (Trade Show Coordinator) at Phone: 1-(306)-332-8249 or
1-(306)-331-8207. To reserve your booth complete the Tradeshow application.
To ensure that all events remain on track the involvement of volunteers is critical. If you wish to volunteer for specific events, and you meet the criteria, please contact Preston Henry at 306.522.2497.
The File Hills Qu’Appelle Tribal Council and their member First Nations encourages everyone to check out the 2008 Saskatchewan First Nation Winter Games and would like to thank all of our sponsors who help make this event successful!
